Data breach affects over 650,000 JD Wetherspoon customers

JD Wetherspoon is the latest victim of a cyber attack, with 656,723 of its customers’ email addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth among data breached. It comes quickly after a number of similar high profile data breaches in recent months.

In a press release, the UK pub chain operator states that the breach is in relation to an old version of its website, which has now been replaced in its entirety. Furthermore, while the amount of customers affected is significant, JD Wetherspoon state that only a very small number of these (100), have had a limited amount of credit/debit card information stolen.

Elsewhere, it has been reported that some of these personal details have been put up for sale by hackers on the dark web. The breach was first identified by the cyber intelligence group CyberInt.

While JD Wetherspoon states that the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) had been notified of the breach and a forensic investigation is underway, no arrests have yet been reported.
