It has been revealed that 156,959 customers’ personal details were accessed in last month’s cyber attack on the TalkTalk website. In a press release, the UK telecoms operators state that they have been working hard with the Metropolitan Police since the attack to establish exactly what happened and understand the extent of customer data stolen.
Reports suggest that this number represents approximately 4% of TalkTalk’s total customers and consequently is fewer than initially suspected.
Furthermore, TalkTalk state that only 15,656 bank account numbers and sort codes were accessed and the individual owners have now all been contacted.
TalkTalk are also keen to stress that this cyber attack was not on their core systems, but on their website, where no complete credit card details were stored.
